Find solutions to common problems and issues

Game Won't Launch

Problem: tModLoader crashes or fails to start when launched.

Solutions:
  • Verify that Terraria is properly installed and up to date
  • Reinstall tModLoader - uninstall completely and download the latest version
  • Check if your antivirus is blocking tModLoader and add it to exceptions
  • Run tModLoader as administrator (right-click → Run as administrator)
  • Check the error logs in Documents/My Games/Terraria/ModLoader/Logs
  • Ensure you have the required .NET Framework installed

Mods Not Loading

Problem: Mods are installed but not appearing or working in-game.

Solutions:
  • Make sure mods are enabled in the Mods menu
  • Check if mods are compatible with your tModLoader version
  • Verify mod files are in the correct location (Documents/My Games/Terraria/ModLoader/Mods)
  • Reload mods by going to Mods menu and clicking "Reload Mods"
  • Check for mod conflicts - disable all mods and enable them one by one
  • Update mods to their latest versions

Performance Issues

Problem: Game runs slowly or has low FPS with mods enabled.

Solutions:
  • Reduce the number of active mods - too many mods can cause performance issues
  • Disable resource-intensive mods that you're not actively using
  • Lower in-game graphics settings
  • Close other applications running in the background
  • Update your graphics drivers
  • Check if specific mods are causing the issue by disabling them individually
  • Allocate more RAM if possible

Mod Browser Not Working

Problem: Can't access mod browser or downloads fail.

Solutions:
  • Check your internet connection
  • Verify firewall settings aren't blocking tModLoader's network access
  • Try restarting tModLoader
  • Clear the mod browser cache (delete cache folder if it exists)
  • Update tModLoader to the latest version
  • Manually download mods from the repository if browser continues to fail

World/Character Corruption

Problem: Worlds or characters become corrupted or unloadable.

Solutions:
  • Always backup your worlds and characters before installing new mods
  • Don't remove mods from worlds that were created with those mods
  • Check if mods were updated - updates can sometimes cause compatibility issues
  • Restore from backup if available
  • Check the world/character files in Documents/My Games/Terraria/ModLoader/Worlds or Players
  • Try loading the world/character in vanilla Terraria if possible

Multiplayer Connection Issues

Problem: Can't connect to multiplayer servers or friends can't join.

Solutions:
  • Ensure all players have the exact same mods installed and enabled
  • Check that mod versions match across all clients
  • Verify mod load order is the same for all players
  • Check firewall and port forwarding settings
  • Try hosting through Steam if using Steam version
  • Verify all players are using the same tModLoader version
  • Check server logs for specific error messages

Mod Conflicts

Problem: Mods conflict with each other causing crashes or bugs.

Solutions:
  • Read mod descriptions for known compatibility issues
  • Disable all mods and enable them one by one to identify conflicts
  • Check mod load order - some mods need to load before others
  • Look for compatibility patches or alternative mods
  • Check mod forums and GitHub issues for known conflicts
  • Update all mods to their latest versions

Missing Dependencies

Problem: Mods require other mods that aren't installed.

Solutions:
  • Read mod descriptions carefully for required dependencies
  • Install all required mods listed in the mod's description
  • Use the Mod Browser - it will automatically suggest required dependencies
  • Check mod load order - dependency mods should load before dependent mods
  • Update dependencies to compatible versions
